PREVIEW: French Wives w/ Bwani Junction & Galleries

28/02 @ Sneaky Pete’s. Edinburgh.

09/03 @ Stereo. Glasgow.

French Wives are a five-piece indie-pop outfit. Jangly guitars, soaring violin and punchy lyrics all combine to create a rousing, warming, singalong bunch of songs. Their new single “Numbers” is a good example of their merits, as is last year’s “Covered in Grace”. [Both benefiting from cute-yet-slightly-uncomfortable videos from Sync or Swim Productions, who do plenty of good work.]

Scott from the band had this to say about the Edinburgh & Glasgow dates:

These two gigs bookend our UK tour in support of our free download single “Younger”, which is taken from our debut album Dream of the Inbetween. They also serve as fundraisers for our maiden voyage to the continent of North America where we’re performing at SxSW and Canadian Music Week, as well as a few other cities along the way. We’re really pleased to have Bwani Junction and Galleries on board, as they’re two great and diverse bands, and it promises to be a great night.

Bwani Junction have some decent credentials to their name, not least headlining the ‘BBC Introducing’ stage at T in the Park, and their album ‘Fully Cocked’ reaching #24 in the iTunes ‘Alternative’ chart on the first week of its release. They’ll be peddling their ‘afro-beat tinged’ brand of indie. (I found that description in a review; don’t struggle to work out what afro-beat-tinged-indie sounds like. Just play the damn video.)

On this bill, Galleries are my personal highlight. Pure indiepop euphoria / melancholia — a retro post-rock sound lovingly sprinkled with falsetto baubles. Galleries give noise a good name; swelling and atmospheric, their sound excels in a live setting and creates something truly captivating.

[[ I can’t get the Galleries video to embed properly, so just follow this link. Opens in a new tab. ]]

Tickets for both gigs are £6. (Links at top of post.) I’ll be at the Stereo gig, & I look forward to seeing you there.
